In the world of accounting and consulting, relationships matter as much as results. At DZA, Kami Matzek has made her mark by blending deep financial expertise with an authentic, people-first approach. Whether leading strategic initiatives or mentoring a coworker, Kami brings both heart and precision to everything she does.

Building Something New at DZA
Kami’s journey with DZA spans nearly two decades. Originally drawn to the firm for its client-centric mission, she quickly became a pivotal figure in shaping its future. With Senior Manager, Cory Burnett, she co-launched the Client Accounting and Advisory Services (CAAS) division, a strategic effort to deliver more proactive, flexible support to organizations navigating increasingly complex financial landscapes.

“CAAS was born because we saw the same problem over and over again,” Kami explained. “Clients were overwhelmed and struggling to find part-time help. So, we asked, how can we build something that truly meets them where they are?”

Her answer? A flexible, expert-led accounting service focused particularly on rural healthcare organizations. “We’re trying to help solve the accountant shortage, especially for those critical access hospitals in rural areas,” she said. “It’s rewarding, because we’re providing a real solution.”

Balancing Challenges with Determination
Near the beginning of Kami’s time at DZA, Kami faced a personal challenge when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). While the diagnosis presented hurdles, Kami remained focused on her work, driven by the support from her team. DZA’s commitment to flexibility and understanding made it possible for Kami to continue excelling in her role. “The support I received made all the difference,” she shared.

DZA didn’t just support Kami personally; they actively showed their commitment by participating in the MS Walk. Colleagues joined Kami to raise awareness and funds for MS research, demonstrating the strong sense of community and solidarity within the firm. This active involvement highlighted the team’s dedication not just to Kami, but to making a positive impact in the wider community as well. “It wasn’t just emotional support,” Kami said. “They showed up. That’s the kind of team we are.”

A Clear Vision for the Future
Since becoming a partner, Kami brings a strong perspective on the firm’s independence. As private equity reshapes the accounting landscape, she’s fiercely protective of DZA’s integrity.

“I’m really proud that we’re independently owned,” she said. “Clients trust us because they know our advice isn’t driven by shareholders or outside interests. That trust is sacred.”

Her leadership reflects a belief that quality client service comes from ethical standards, real-world solutions, and long-term thinking.

A Life Rooted in Balance
Away from balance sheets, Kami’s life is anything but typical. On Spokane’s North Side, she and her family have embarked in homesteading, raising 40 chickens, building a greenhouse, and canning.

She also fosters rescue dogs and finds joy in sharing eggs with friends, colleagues, and neighbors. “It’s just part of who I am,” she said. “Taking care of things—whether it’s a spreadsheet or a stray dog—feels natural.”

Her adventurous spirit recently took her to Thailand over the holidays. Travel, she said, “gives me perspective. It reminds me there’s always something new to learn.”

Looking Ahead
As DZA continues to grow, Kami remains laser-focused on delivering meaningful value to clients. Whether it’s guiding a critical access hospital through their Medicare cost report or mentoring the next generation of CPAs, she brings clarity, compassion, and drive.
