A Thoughtful Approach to Accounting

Meet Alexis Fogal, a Senior Accountant at DZA who brings both technical expertise and a strong sense of mentorship to her role. She provides accounting and reimbursement services to healthcare and not-for-profit clients, while also helping guide and support newer team members.

“I also see it as part of my job to teach and share knowledge with newer staff,” Alexis says. “Having started here as an intern and then as staff, I understand what it feels like to be new, especially when you are applying what you learned in school to real client work for the first time.”

With several years of experience at DZA, Alexis approaches her work with empathy, patience, and a deep understanding of the learning curve many young professionals face.

Finding a Passion for Healthcare

What Alexis enjoys most about accounting might surprise some. She is especially interested in the inner workings of hospitals and the healthcare system as a whole.

“I really enjoy learning how hospitals operate,” she explains. “Understanding how different insurance payors work, how departments function, and how everything connects is fascinating.”

She compares her work in auditing and reimbursement to solving a puzzle.

“You can see how everything fits together and how one piece can impact another. It is rewarding when it all starts to make sense.”

An Unexpected Career Path

Alexis did not always know she wanted to pursue accounting. In fact, her early career ideas were very different.

“I went into college unsure of what I wanted to do,” she says. “At one point I wanted to be a chef, and at another I considered becoming an anesthesiologist.”

Everything changed after taking an accounting class during her freshman year.

“I ended up really liking it, so I kept taking more classes and eventually decided to make it my career.”

Her experience at DZA began as an intern, where she quickly realized it was the right fit.

“I liked that I could apply what I was learning in school to real work,” Alexis shares. “I also really liked the people and the overall positive team environment.”

Specialized Work and Meaningful Projects

Alexis focuses on financial statement audits for critical access hospitals, community health centers, and not-for-profit organizations. She also has experience working on Ground Emergency Medical Transport (GEMT) reimbursements.

“My favorite projects are the GEMT reimbursements,” she says. “They feel like a mini puzzle, and I enjoy learning how ambulances operate within the hospital system. It has also given me insight into Medicaid, which has been really interesting to learn.”

Her attention to detail and curiosity also help her navigate complex projects with confidence.

Continuing to Grow

Alexis holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in professional accounting and is currently working toward earning her CPA.

“That will be my next big accomplishment,” she says.

Her commitment to growth reflects her dedication to both her clients and her career.

A Culture That Feels Like Home

For Alexis, one of the most meaningful aspects of working at DZA is the firm’s culture.

“It feels more like a family here,” she shares. “There is a strong support system, and there are always opportunities to learn and improve.”

She also appreciates the firm’s emphasis on training and development.

“Everyone takes the time to make sure you understand what you are doing, how it works, and why it matters.”

Life Outside the Office

Outside of work, Alexis enjoys baking and gaming, two hobbies that reflect both creativity and fun.

“I love baking, especially things like muffins and cookies,” she says. “It is something I used to do a lot with my grandmother, and I still enjoy it today.”

She is also a big fan of video games, especially Mario-based games.

“My mom introduced me to Mario games when I was younger, and I have been a fan ever since. I probably own more Mario games than I should.”

In addition to her hobbies, Alexis is passionate about music.

“I have a record collection of around 115 albums and listen to all kinds of music,” she says. “I am also hoping to learn how to play an instrument this year.”

Giving Back

Alexis enjoys staying involved in her community and looks forward to participating in the MS Walk each year.

“It is a great cause, and the people you meet there are always so positive,” she says. “It is also a really fun team bonding activity for DZA.”

Rooted in Spokane

Born and raised in Spokane, Alexis has deep roots in the community she calls home.

“Most of my family is from here, so it has always felt like home,” she shares.
