At DZA, we are committed to providing exceptional accounting services tailored to the unique needs of our clients. Today, we’re proud to spotlight Dan Cleveland, a Senior Manager at our firm, who plays a pivotal role in our assurance services. With extensive experience in audits for not-for-profits, federally qualified health centers, and single audits, Dan’s dedication to excellence and client care sets him apart. Here’s a closer look at his career, expertise, and what makes his role at DZA so fulfilling.

Current Role and Responsibilities: Ensuring Compliance and Excellence

As a Senior Manager at DZA, Dan specializes in providing assurance services to a variety of clients, including not-for-profits and health centers. He’s also deeply involved in single audits, which are critical for organizations that receive federal funding.

“I am part of the audit quality management team, where I focus on continuous improvement of single audits,” Dan explains. “These audits are crucial for ensuring compliance with the Uniform Guidance, a set of regulations governing federal grants, and I’m deeply committed to upholding the highest standards in this area.”

Career Path: From Manufacturing to Accounting

What may surprise some is that accounting is actually Dan’s second career. After spending several years in the manufacturing industry, Dan decided to make a career change when job opportunities in manufacturing became limited in Spokane. “I went back to school and took an accounting course at Spokane Community College,” Dan recalls. “That was the first subject I’d ever taken where I thought, ‘I could do this for a living.’”

Driven by a newfound passion for numbers and financial systems, Dan set his sights on becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a goal he achieved while balancing part-time work and raising two children. “Attaining my CPA license was a goal I set from the beginning, and I didn’t give up until I accomplished it,” Dan says. “I think this is a goal that we are seeing too many young accountants give up on. I encourage young accountants to pursue their full goals, even when the path feels tough.”

Expertise: Specializing in Complex Audit Services

Dan specializes in auditing not-for-profits, federally qualified health centers, and single audits. These sectors present unique challenges, and Dan’s expertise is invaluable in helping organizations meet compliance requirements.

“I stay up to date on industry trends and regulatory changes by continually educating myself and networking within these specialized areas,” Dan says. “The goal is always to provide our clients with the best possible service, which means understanding the latest rules and regulations in detail.”

Life at DZA: People First, Always

What makes DZA stand out from other accounting firms? For Dan, it’s the firm’s culture and emphasis on relationships—both with clients and colleagues. “At DZA, it’s not just about the numbers,” he explains. “We focus on people. Our clients are treated as partners, and we prioritize fostering positive relationships with them. It’s also about creating a supportive environment for employees, where work-life balance and morale are top priorities.”

In addition to his work at DZA, Dan is actively involved in the firm’s community outreach efforts. “Giving back is important to all of us at DZA,” he says. “Whether it’s volunteering or supporting local initiatives, it’s great to be part of a firm that’s committed to making a difference.”

Personal Background: A Love for Family and the Outdoors

Dan is a Spokane native, having lived in the area for most of his life. He did spend some time in northern Nevada after high school, but after the birth of their first child, Dan and his wife decided to return to Spokane to be closer to family. “We wanted our kids to grow up around their grandparents and extended family,” he says.

Outside of work, Dan enjoys “glamping”—a more comfortable, modern twist on camping. “It’s nice to get away from the technology overload we all find ourselves in these days. I find it refreshing to just sit back in a campground in the middle-of-nowhere, enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, a good barbecue, and a beer,” Dan expressed.

DZA’s Impact: More Than Just Accounting

At DZA, we understand that our work extends far beyond just financial statements. We’re dedicated to making a positive impact through our services and our involvement in the community. Dan is a prime example of the kind of professional who goes above and beyond to ensure our clients’ needs are met with integrity, expertise, and care.
