Wondering what it’s really like to intern at DZA? Just ask James.
James Harrison recently wrapped up his internship with DZA while finishing a triple major in Accounting, Finance, and Entrepreneurship at Washington State University. Between classes, working as a teaching assistant, and winning WSU’s Business Plan Competition, James had a full plate, but he still found room to grow (and thrive) at DZA.
“If I had to sum up my internship in one word, it would be ‘insightful,’” James says. “It gave me a real-world look at what a long-term career in accounting can be and helped me grow faster than I expected.”
A Place Where You’re Supported, Not Just Supervised
When James started, he didn’t just shadow someone else’s work—he got involved. Whether it was working on cost reports or full audit cycles, he was trusted with real tasks and felt supported every step of the way.
“Everyone I worked with, from seniors to managers, took the time to answer my questions and actually cared that I understood what I was doing.”
At DZA, interns aren’t left to figure things out alone. You’ll learn by doing, but you’ll never be on your own.
School, Life, and Work — All in Balance
James knows what it means to be busy. But what surprised him most about DZA was how much he felt the firm respected his time and supported his schedule.
“I was able to balance everything, including my internship, because DZA’s flexible structure and nationwide team meant I could get support whenever I needed it. Balance is clearly valued across all levels of the firm.”
With team members across the U.S., help is just a message away no matter when you’re working. And work-life balance isn’t just a buzzword here. It’s part of the culture.
Growth That Feels Real
From learning new software to handling entire stages of an audit, James didn’t just complete tasks—he gained real experience.
“I got feedback constantly, not just during formal reviews but throughout projects. That helped me learn quickly and improve right away.”
He even got the chance to explore areas he was curious about, like cost reports (which, according to James, are “as much an art as a science”).
A Team That Feels Like One
What made James feel most connected? Collaboration and community.
“Weekly team meetings helped keep everyone on track. And trivia lunches? Honestly, one of my favorite things! They’re a great way to meet people outside your immediate team.”
At DZA, relationships matter. Interns are included, welcomed, and valued.
Advice for Students Thinking About DZA
James wants other students to know this: you can thrive here. Whether you’re balancing a tough course load or exploring different career paths, DZA gives you room to grow without burning out.
“I felt like I learned more here than I ever expected, and I’d recommend the internship to anyone who wants real experience and a great team around them.”
